At Athina, we believe that everyone can benefit from the humanities. It is one of our guiding principles. History, literature, art, etc., reflect who we were in the past and where we are now. Much of our past programming has focused on history, but literature is also important. For this reason, 2025 will be dedicated to programming related to books.
As the ancient proverb goes, “Speech is silver, but silence is golden.” So grab your favorite book and join other readers in the Goodnow Library's newly renovated Historical Room for an evening of reading and socializing. The gatherings will be divided into 45 minutes of quiet time for free reading, followed by social time facilitated by Athina Education.
Silent reading groups are the perfect opportunity for book lovers to meet other like-minded individuals without the pressure of reading an assigned book.
Registration is not required. Not sure what to read? Librarians will be on hand to provide recommendations and help you check out a book!
Last Thursday of each month (beginning March 27th)
6:00 - 7:30 pm - Historical Room
Goodnow Library, 21 Concord Rd, Sudbury, MA 01776
We will begin with a discussion of Tocqueville's reflections on the Township in America, the first part of Chapter 5 in the Mansfield/Winthrop translation,* with a particular focus on "The Powers of the Township" (pages 58-61) for those with limited reading time.
Based on our survey for those interested in joining our reading club, Tuesday morning was the most popular meeting day and time. Therefore, we've set aside the third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for this purpose.
The reading club is open to anyone from anywhere interested in participating. A monthly commitment is not required. Each month, we will discuss a small section of the book and discuss questions curated for that excerpt. To participate, please RSVP.
For those unable to obtain a copy of the book in time to read the text before the April 15 meeting, please email us at athina.ed@gmail.com, and we will provide the relevant excerpt.
*There are many translations of Tocqueville's book. For the reading club, we will use the translation by Harvey Mansfield and Delba Winthrop, published in 2002.
